Flowers and plants make the basic decorations you find in homes and corporations, gardens and shopping centers. There are however people who have pushed the concept of indoor gardening a lot further, and actually grow a herb garden indoors Such projects depend on artificial lighting systems, which does not allow weeds to proliferate as much as sunlight. Plus, the gardener has a direct influence on the soil, in the absence of the weather influence.
Indoor gardening depends on containers or pots made either from plastic or from ceramic materials. Plastic has the inconvenience of getting hot, which is why most gardeners prefer ceramic materials with some form of drainage at the bottom to let water flow away. The preparation of the soil poses most challenges for indoor gardening. Different or equal proportions of ingredients need to be added, such as sharp coarse sand, peat moss and native soil.
Another type of soil mix for indoor gardening contains forest mulch, perlite, silica and sand in an equal volume. The conditions change if your vegetables grow in hanging containers because you have to keep them lightweight normally relying on some premixed soils. From this perspective, indoor gardening costs more because the soil mixture influences costs. But, once again, the extent to which you perform indoor gardening matters a lot.
Other than soil, another issue worth considering is that of containers. They should have proper drainage and aeration. In order to water the plants without any problem, you should leave some two inches between the soil level and the margin of the container. As for the gardening cycles, most people will stick to the same routine as with outdoor gardening. Yet, since there are no weather changes, you can grow plants directly from seeds.
Cherry tomatoes and herbs are among the favorite to grow by indoor gardening. They look nice, they are very attractive and the fragrance is great. Chives, mint and rosemary will delight your senses while you are working on your little indoors garden. You can enhance the beauty of the garden by improvising with the arrangement of plant stands, tables, shelves and the rest of the ‘furniture’.

All plants, whether grown in soil or in a soilless hydroponic growing system, all need three components for living. They include water, oxygen and food. When plants grow in soil, the little nooks and crevices in the soil texture surrounding the roots of the plants are how the plants can receive oxygen via the roots. When the plant is grown in a hydroponic environment, however, it takes a little more planning in order to ensure that the roots receive the oxygen that they need. One effective way that indoor gardeners get oxygen to the plants’ roots is through the use of hydroponics air pumps. There are many great hydroponics air pumps available, including the Alita linear air pump and the Eco Plus air pump, which are suitable for use in hydroponic gardening environments.
One type of hydroponic gardening that utilizes hydroponics air pumps is the deep water culture method. In its simplest form, a bucket is used to hold the plant food, which is a nutrient solution. Above this liquid, the crown of the plant is suspended above the liquid line, usually through the means of netting that is spread across the top of the bucket. This allows the plant roots to dangle down into the nutrient solution, and the plant takes up both water and food via the roots in this way.
The nutrient solution must be oxygenated for the plant to thrive, and thus a linear air pump can be used for this purpose. Although other methods avoid root rots and other problems with root exposure to liquid by moving the solution so that the roots do not remain under water, in the deep water culture system this can be a big problem unless hydroponics air pumps are used to oxygenate the nutrient solution to the point where the roots can stay submerged and not rot.
Many indoor hydroponic gardeners use the Alita linear air pump. The linear air pump is noted for being quiet while running, an important consideration for those who are gardening indoors. The Alita air pump also uses little energy to activate the pump. Starting at just twenty-six watts of power to run a 1.4 psi linear air pump, the Alita air pump also has no sliding components or parts that require lubrication, and thus it works very well to bring air to the plant roots without contaminating them.
The Eco Plus air pump is another popular brand. These air pumps come with a one-year warranty, and some are also available with a controllable variable output.

Houseplants and herb gardens are well-known as common plants that can be grown indoors, but they are not the only ones. By using the right containers and having the ability to mimic ideal growing conditions, you can also have a successful indoor vegetable garden. The benefits of having one go beyond the beautification of your home or the relaxation you get from gardening, as you can also pick your own food right in your kitchen.
If you find yourself limited by a lack of space outdoors, having an indoor vegetable garden is simply a logical thing to do.
Carrots, tomatoes, and radishes are three of the easiest fruits and vegetables to grow indoors. Each grows differently and will need separate containers, but with a little bit of research this should not be too much of a problem.
Never use black containers for your indoor vegetable garden as these retain the heat of the sun. Use light-colored containers instead.
A south-facing window is the best source of natural sunlight for your vegetables to grow in. If you do not have the right exposure, you can invest in an artificial bulb for a source of supplemental light.
As with any container you choose to grow plants in, making sure there is enough drainage is vitally important. If your plants sit in too much water they are not going to survive. If the pots you choose do not have holes in the bottom, be sure to have a layer of gravel or wood chips to allow the water to run out of the soil. The flip side of this is to ensure that the water does not run out too quickly either.
Your plants will have a greater chance of survival if you choose a bigger container. This will need watering less frequently as the more soil there is, the more moisture it will retain.
When choosing the types of vegetables to plant, follow the same guidelines as you would for outdoors. On the seed packets you will find recommendations on when to plant, the amount of light and water that is needed and the spacing requirements. Tailor your water schedule according to the condition of the soil, making sure that it doesn’t get too dry or stay too wet.
By the end of the summer or early fall you should be able to harvest the vegetables grown inside your own home.
The timeless scooter is a lot of fun and a wonderful form of exercise. Using a scooter helps children improve their balance and agility and helps build physical endurance. Scooters have long been a popular choice for kids when it comes to outdoor play.
Why not enhance a child’s scooter with Kids Scooter Accessories?
Any girl would most definitely love to have her scooter decorated with beautiful flower stickers and sparkly gems. A boy would enjoy being able to personalise his scooter with some cool flame stickers. Perhaps a child would like to decorate their scooter with their name using alphabet stickers. There’s no need to worry about the quality of the stickers. They are made of PVC and are weather resistant.
Of course, boys and girls alike would enjoy having a fun horn to honk as they make their way around the neighbourhood. After all, the more noise, the better as far as children are concerned. Don’t forget the streamers! Pink, blue and long, short are just a few of the options that exist as far as streamers are concerned.
As always, safety is a very important consideration for any parent when it comes to the toys their children use. There are various micro scooter accessories that are available to help improve the safety of a scooter such as non-slip grips that allow the child to have better footing when riding a scooter. The grips come in fun designs and, just like the stickers, are made from weather resistant PVC.
Of course, as a parent, while it is a lot of fun to take your child to a nearby park to ride his or her scooter, kids may get tired after having been so active, and the mom or dad may have to carry the scooter home while the child rests comfortably in their buggy. An easy solution to this is to buy a scooter hook. It easily hooks to the buggy’s handlebars and frees up the parent’s hands.
Kids Scooter Accessories will make your child’s scooter stand out from the crowd which will encourage your child to use it more often. They are perfect for a birthday or holiday gift or perhaps even as a reward for a recent accomplishment your child has made. Kids Scooter Accessories are such an affordable way to inspire your child to be more active outdoors!
It’s so easy to set up an indoor herb kitchen garden because so many culinary herbs are well suited to growing both indoors and in recycled containers. Your ability to grow veggies in your organic kitchen garden starts with only a few simple recycled materials and the simple will to feed your family only the finest organic foods grown fresh in your designed kitchen garden.
Here are six easy to grow herbs without even trying; chives, thyme, mints, French tarragon, sweet marjoram and sage. As well, also think seriously about growing your own parsley, rosemary, nasturtiums and basil. So which ones do you plant and how do you grow them? It really depends firstly on which ones you would like to grow, how much you use of one or the other and then your budget, and of course the amount of well lit space you have.
The high tech “A-Garden” type with its own lights and gadgetry is great and really works well (you know the one it’s advertised on TV everywhere), but it’s not cheap and not very big. Whereas, at the other end of the budget is a set of recycled pots and containers with seedlings and your sunny windowsill, planter box or sunroom.
Something in-between these two extremes are the compartmentalised pots like the “strawberry pot”, which is also great. Also in the middle are the grow veggies kit forms where you just add water and place in a sunny position and look after for a period of a few weeks. These are also absolutely great for those limited to space for your kitchen garden.
I personally do not recommend planting different herbs in the one single pot as the competition for growing space problems far outweighs the advantages of individual containers. If you do use the compartmentalised pots then try to mix the same general types of herbs together for the re-growth habits, height and moisture requirements.
The important thing is light, whether natural or artificial. Adequate light is essential to growing good herbs and veggies. If you don’t have enough natural light then you’ll need to supplement it with artificial light.
Why not consider making your own tiered shelving with its own lighting? I’ve seen it done and its particularly good in climates where it’s dark for much of the year but indoors is continually nice and warm; or even consider using a skylight or solar tube, another inexpensive method of free natural lighting.
If you have a well-lit patio or sunroom where you grow dwarf fruit trees in containers (citrus, stone-fruits or pomegranates etc) then you can plant perennial herbs in the same pots with them such as rosemary, mints etc.
For the longest time I struggled with the idea of depriving my three rescued-from-a-homeless-life felines the “joys” of outdoor exposure. As a result of my inner turmoil regarding this, for many years I kept letting my cats outdoors, to do their bidding and what “cats naturally do”. I thought I was providing them the full and rewarding lives they so richly deserved. Some of my friends and colleagues were sharing their thoughts about how outdoor cats tend to not live as long as indoor cats, though I tended not to heed their feedback as much more than their own opinions, and kept trusting what I thought was my “gut” in making the right decision by continuing to allow my three “boys” outdoor frolicking.
As I further researched this topic – in conjunction with discussions with my cats’ veterinarian – it seems that there is merit to considering offering an indoor life to cats, not to mention multiple benefits. The first – and very important – benefit is that indoors cats tend to live almost double the years that outdoor cats do. The average life span of cats that are allowed outdoors on a regular basis is around 7-8 years, while indoor cats – barring other health issues – is about 15 years.
There may be many factors, I’m sure, for this discrepancy. For one, the outdoor environment is more in flux regarding providing a stable healthy environment, with the risk of cats running into sick animals and getting infected with whatever is ailing them much higher than indoor animals’ exposure. Other risks involve territorial fights, with concurrent injuries. Death by auto – not to mention other animals; ie. dogs, fisher cats, other wild animals – are also risks of being outdoors.
The more I read about this, the more I became convinced that keeping my little ones indoors seemed like the way to go. I then began purchasing more “toys” to “simulate” some of the outdoor temptations cats love to partake in so much, such as a squeaky mouse, balls with catnip inside, etc. I also purchased a high quality cat condo (tree), as their “jungle gym”, to make as real as possible cats’ alluring draw to climbing, hiding, and nesting in tree tops.
Needless to say, over time I felt less and less that I was depriving my kids and more that I was offering a life which would potentially allow them a healthier existence, and more time on this planet as a result.
And, that makes their daddy very happy!

Growing an indoor bonsai tree can be a great hobby full of rewards and relaxation. Or, it can be a frustrating experience that ends up costing a lot of money with nothing to show for it. What makes the difference? There is a plain and simple answer – knowledge and patience. Does this mean that the beginner has no hope of being successful? No! It just means that before starting the wonderful journey into the world of bonsai, you must make sure that you have the basic knowledge to maximize your chance for success. Two of the first steps are choosing a optimal location and choosing the correct species.
Indoor Bonsai Tree Location
The first thing you need to consider is where you want to keep your bonsai tree. Since a bonsai is, after nothing more than a miniature tree – the only difference between a bonsai tree and a regular ordinary tree is the size and care – they are best grown outdoors. This doesnt mean that you can grow an indoor bonsai tree just that extreme care is needed on such things as type, location, tools and supplies. Indoor bonsai trees in general should be placed in a sunny area near a window where there is minimal exposure to variations in temperature. Do not place a bonsai tree on a window sill however, as there is a high chance of temperature variation there. Also avoid areas near heating ducts or vents, as the temperature will vary there.
Indoor Bonsai Species
Indoor bonsai trees generally range from 8 to 12 inches in height. There are several species that do well indoors provided there are the correct conditions. In General you want to choose a Tropical or Sub-tropical species, as these are types that generally thrive at a temperature around 65 degrees. Since this is close to the temperature that most people keep their homes and offices, these species do very well indoors. Some of the most popular types of indoor bonsai trees include: Baby Jade, Chinese Elm, Ficus, and Japanese Maple. The primary factors to look at when choosing a tree are to look at which one or ones thrive in an environment that matches your home, which styles have availability of good quality trees, and of course personal preference.
Choosing a good location and the correct type of tree are among the most crucial elements for indoor bonsai tree success. It is well worth the effort to learn important details before purchasing your indoor bonsai tree. If you correctly place your tree, and choose a species that adapts well to an indoor environment, you will be well on your way to a successful bonsai experience. Bonsai is a hobby and art form you can enjoy for a lifetime!
